One Day in Newport, Oregon: An Aquarium, Oddities & a Little Unexpected Horror

Some vacation days are all about slowing down, soaking up the scenery, and enjoying a little peace and quiet.

And then there are the days when you eat pancakes, admire adorable sea creatures, explore bizarre exhibits, and nearly lose your mind inside a wax museum!!

Our day trip to Newport, Oregon, was very much the latter.

During our September 2026 family road trip along the Oregon Coast, my husband Jared, my parents, and I spent four nights in nearby Yachats. While we loved the slower pace of our coastal home base, we also wanted to explore some of the neighboring towns.

So we set aside a day for Newport. And OH MY GOSH, did we have fun!

One Day in Newport, Oregon

Newport is one of those Oregon Coast destinations with a little something for everyone. There's beautiful coastal scenery, a bustling historic waterfront, delicious restaurants, and plenty of attractions to keep visitors entertained.

We decided to embrace our inner tourists and spend the day exploring some of Newport's most recognizable attractions.

And while many of these places are popular with families, I'm here to tell you that they're just as entertaining when you're a couple of adults looking for a little adventure.

If you're planning a day trip to Newport, Oregon, here's how we spent ours, what we loved most, and a few things I'd recommend knowing before you go.

Is Newport, Oregon, Worth Visiting?

Absolutely!

Located along Oregon's central coast, Newport is a wonderful destination for anyone who enjoys marine life, quirky attractions, coastal dining, and exploring local businesses.

It's also a great day-trip option if you're staying in neighboring communities like Yachats or Lincoln City.

Unlike some of the quieter coastal towns, Newport has a busier, more attraction-focused atmosphere.

That makes it especially appealing if you're looking to fill an entire day with activities rather than spend most of your time relaxing on the beach.

For us, it was a fun contrast to our peaceful afternoons in Yachats.

And while we only had time for a handful of attractions, we easily could have spent another day exploring Newport's waterfront shops, restaurants, and other local favorites.

Our One-Day Newport, Oregon Itinerary

We kept our itinerary fairly simple, focusing on four stops that offered a mix of food, marine life, and wonderfully unusual entertainment.

Here's how we spent our day:

  1. Breakfast at Pig 'N Pancake

  2. Exploring the Oregon Coast Aquarium

  3. Visiting Ripley's Believe It or Not!

  4. Getting thoroughly entertained (and slightly traumatized) at The Wax Works

We didn't follow an overly strict schedule, which made the day feel relaxed despite having several attractions on our list.

If you're planning something similar, I'd recommend starting with breakfast and giving yourself plenty of time at the aquarium before heading toward Newport's historic bayfront for the afternoon.

Start Your Morning at Pig 'N Pancake

First things first: breakfast.

We kicked off our Newport adventure at Pig 'N Pancake, a classic Oregon Coast restaurant known for its diner-style breakfast offerings.

Sometimes you want an elaborate brunch with creative dishes and beautiful presentation. Other times, you just want a really good stack of pancakes! This was definitely a pancake kind of morning. :) Jared and I shared a short stack, and honestly, they were SO good. Fluffy, delicious, and exactly what we needed before a day of exploring.

The restaurant has that familiar, comforting breakfast atmosphere that makes it easy to settle in and enjoy a leisurely meal.

If you're visiting Newport and looking for a classic breakfast spot, Pig 'N Pancake is a great place to start. Planning a busy sightseeing day? Eat a good breakfast before heading to the attractions. You'll be glad you did!

Visit the Oregon Coast Aquarium

After breakfast, we headed to one of Newport's most popular attractions: the Oregon Coast Aquarium.

And I don't care how old I get. I will ALWAYS be excited about visiting an aquarium.

There's something so magical about getting an up-close look at marine animals, especially creatures you might otherwise never have the opportunity to see.

During our visit, we spent time exploring the exhibits, admiring colorful fish, watching sea lions, and getting entirely too excited about the puffins. Seriously, the puffins. I love them!!!

We also enjoyed seeing sea stars and learning more about the incredible marine life found along the Pacific Coast. (Just look at those stunning jellyfish at the top of this post!!).

The aquarium offers a nice combination of indoor and outdoor experiences, making it a wonderful activity for visitors of different ages. My fave part was the Passages of the Deep exhibit where you get to see the creatures swimming around you and above you in a glass walkway!

And while it's certainly a popular family destination, I think adults who enjoy animals and marine conservation will have just as much fun. :)

How Much Time Should You Spend at the Oregon Coast Aquarium?

I'd recommend allowing at least a couple of hours if you want to explore without feeling rushed.

The exact amount of time you'll need depends on your interest in the exhibits, whether you stop for educational presentations, and how busy the aquarium is during your visit.

Personally, I enjoy getting sucked into the sight of an adorable animal doing something entertaining, and I'm absolutely going to stand there and watch… even if that leaves me with little time left for exploring the town. No regrets!

Tips for Visiting the Oregon Coast Aquarium

A few things I'd recommend:

  • Check current admission prices and operating hours before visiting.

  • Consider purchasing tickets ahead of time if the aquarium recommends it for your travel dates.

  • Bring a light jacket, since portions of the experience are outdoors.

  • Give yourself enough time to enjoy the exhibits without feeling like you're racing through them.

  • If you love photography, be patient and respectful around the animals and other visitors. Everyone gets their turn!

And most importantly, don't feel silly about getting excited over a puffin. You're among friends here. ;)

Explore Ripley's Believe It or Not! in Newport

After our aquarium adventure, we decided it was time to embrace the weird.

Our next stop was Ripley's Believe It or Not!, located along Newport's historic bayfront.

If you've never visited a Ripley's attraction before, imagine a collection of bizarre stories, unusual objects, optical illusions, and exhibits that make you stop and say, "Wait… WHAT?" That's essentially the experience.

We had a great time wandering through the exhibits, discovering strange facts, and seeing what unexpected surprises waited around each corner.

It's the kind of attraction that encourages curiosity and doesn't take itself too seriously!

Is Ripley's Believe It or Not! Fun for Adults?

I think so! While plenty of families visit Ripley's, I wouldn't consider it an attraction that's exclusively for children.

If you enjoy oddities, unusual history, quirky museums, and interactive exhibits, there's plenty to keep you entertained.

It's also a fun change of pace after spending time outdoors or exploring the coast.

And because the attraction is located in Newport's historic bayfront area, you can easily combine your visit with shopping, dining, or waterfront sightseeing.

Should You Buy the Combination Ticket?

During our visit, we had the option to upgrade our admission to include The Wax Works, a neighboring wax museum located in the same building. Naturally, we said yes!

If you're interested in both attractions, I'd recommend comparing the current individual and combination ticket prices before purchasing.

For us, visiting both was a fun way to extend our afternoon without needing to travel to another part of town.

Just be aware that the wax museum includes some experiences that may not be comfortable for every visitor. Which brings me to the next stop.

The Wax Works: Celebrities, Movie Characters & Unexpected Jump Scares

Oh, The Wax Works. Where do I even begin?

I went into this attraction expecting a fairly straightforward collection of wax figures. You know, a few celebrities, some familiar movie characters, maybe a slightly unsettling face or two. And to be fair, there was plenty of that!

We wandered through room after room of displays featuring recognizable characters and pop culture references. Some were funny, some were impressive, and others were delightfully strange.

But then we reached the horror section. And suddenly, my relaxing Oregon Coast vacation took a turn!!

(He popped out at me right before this)

The Horror Section Is Not for the Faint of Heart

Now, I LOVE horror movies. But I'm not ever super excited to encounter familiar horror characters IRL…

So you can imagine my delight when we came across figures inspired by characters like Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, and Ghostface.

The atmosphere was genuinely creepy. Between the lighting, sound effects, and unexpected jump scares, I spent a good portion of that section simultaneously laughing and freaking out. A very dignified experience, obviously.

If you're a horror fan, you'll probably get a kick out of it. But if you're visiting with young children or anyone who doesn't enjoy scary environments, I'd recommend asking staff about the exhibits before entering.

A Note About the Disorienting Walkway

There's another part of our Wax Works experience that I want to mention because it could be especially helpful for some visitors, especially folks who follow my online content.

After the horror section, we encountered a dark illusion walkway that created a disorienting/dizzying visual effect. As someone who has experienced vestibular sensitivity, I found this portion particularly challenging. The visual environment made me uncomfortable enough that I ended up closing my eyes to get through it.

I did notice signage indicating an alternate route, but depending on where you are in the attraction (like the horror room), avoiding the walkway may involve turning around and retracing your steps.

I can't speak to the museum's current layout or accessibility accommodations at the time you are reading this blog post, so I'd recommend contacting the attraction directly if you have concerns about dizziness, visual motion sensitivity, darkness, or other sensory triggers.

My recommendation: If you or someone in your group experiences vestibular symptoms, motion sensitivity, or discomfort in visually disorienting environments, ask staff about the route and any bypass options before entering.

I still had a great time visiting The Wax Works, but I wish I'd known more about that particular feature ahead of time.

And if sharing my experience helps another visitor plan a more comfortable day, I'm all for it! :)

What Else Can You Do in Newport, Oregon?

While we spent most of our day visiting attractions, Newport has plenty more to offer.

One area I'd love to explore more thoroughly on a future trip is the Historic Bayfront. We saw so many charming shops and restaurants that we simply didn't have time to visit. The waterfront is a great place to wander, browse local businesses, and enjoy the atmosphere of a working coastal community.

If you're planning a longer visit, you could also look into Newport's beaches, additional marine attractions, scenic viewpoints, and local seafood restaurants.

For our particular trip, we chose to prioritize the aquarium and quirky attractions. But I definitely left feeling like there was more to discover.

And honestly, that's one of my favorite feelings after visiting somewhere new - it gives me an excuse to come back!

Can You Visit Newport as a Day Trip From Yachats?

Yes! That's exactly what we did. During our Oregon Coast road trip, we stayed four nights in Yachats and used it as our home base for exploring nearby communities.

Newport is a convenient destination to visit from Yachats, especially if you have a car.

We loved being able to spend the day exploring a busier coastal town before returning to the quieter atmosphere of Yachats in the evening.

If you're deciding where to stay along the central Oregon Coast, I'd recommend considering what kind of vacation you want.

Yachats is wonderful for dramatic coastal scenery, independent restaurants, and a slower pace.

Newport is a great choice if you want easy access to a wider variety of attractions and activities.

Neither approach is better. It just depends on your travel style. Personally, I loved having a little of both.

Tips for Planning a Fun Day in Newport, Oregon

If you're hoping to recreate a similar day trip, here are a few things I'd keep in mind:

  • Start with breakfast. A hearty meal at Pig 'N Pancake was a great way to begin our day.

  • Give the aquarium plenty of time. Don't try to squeeze it into a tiny window between other attractions.

  • Check admission options. If you're interested in both Ripley's and The Wax Works, compare current ticket packages.

  • Consider sensory sensitivities. The Wax Works included scary effects and a disorienting walkway during our visit.

  • Leave room to explore the bayfront. Even if you have a full attraction itinerary, try to save a little time for the surrounding shops and waterfront.

  • Be flexible. You don't need to see everything Newport has to offer in one visit.

Most importantly, let yourself have fun. Sometimes the best travel days are the ones where you stop worrying about whether an attraction is too touristy and simply enjoy the experience! :)

But that's part of what made the day so memorable. There's something wonderful about letting yourself embrace the sillier side of traveling.
