Sailing with Olympia Sailing Company (Olympia, Washington)
If you’re looking for a unique and memorable summer activity great for the whole family, Olympia Sailing Co.’s boutique, private sailing excursions on the South Puget Sound are a must-do! Owned and operated by locals (I actually went to elementary school with one of them!), it’s a bonus that you can also feel good about supporting this business.
Sailing with Olympia Sailing Co.
I was generously gifted this 2-hour Golden Hour sail by my friend Mandy (she really thinks of everything!) and we had SUCH a blast going out on the water as three couples ready for the most epic triple date! All sails depart from the Boston Harbor Marina, just a short drive from downtown Oly. Each sail comes with a complimentary round of cocktails/mocktails, but they are also BYOB. We opted to upgrade and add on a charcuterie board (highly recommend)!
There’s plenty of great seats on board, my favorite (although a bit scary navigating up to it when windy!) was the blue bean bags that offer the very best view from the aft deck. You can go down below, but you might not want to spend much time there if you’re prone to seasickness! I had recently recovered from a vestibular condition so I was not about to chance my dizzies.
You’ll be sailing aboard the “Pterodactyl” - a 42' long traditional schooner built locally by the current owners’ family in the 70's. The captain said we had one of the windiest sails they’d ever seen, so just know it will probably be much calmer and relaxed when you go. :) Be prepared for anything and be sure to pack jackets / dress comfortably! Despite my BYOB note above, YES this schooner is kid-friendly (and dog-friendly), just be sure to familiarize yourself with the FAQs so you are prepped on what all to expect.
They offer quiet morning sails, two-hour or three-hour day sails, and full day sails in addition to golden hour sails, but watching the sunset aboard this lovely vessel was simply magic! We had the absolute best time and can’t wait to go again. :)
